Partnership to Continue Promoting Academic Excellence for Young Rugby Players
April 27, 2015—Hanover, NH: US Collegiate Development and The Rugger’s Edge will renew their partnership for 2015, once again partnering to assist young student-athletes in pursuing higher education while playing top-level collegiate rugby.
The extended collaboration follows the success of USCD’s inaugural Boys Showcase Camp at Dartmouth College, held in June 2014 in conjunction with The Rugger’s Edge. During the day, campers developed their rugby skills under the tutelage of coaches from America’s top academic & rugby universities, as well as staff from the High School & Collegiate All-American teams. In the evenings, USCD campers benefited from academic presentations by The Rugger’s Edge, aimed at preparing student-athletes for the college admissions process and what to expect once admitted.
The formula proved highly effective, with the first class of USCD graduates admitted to a number of the country’s finest academic institutions and winningest collegiate rugby programs, including three Ivy League universities and five schools with national championship-winning rugby teams.
"We are happy to be renewing our relationship with US Collegiate Development and helping student-athletes find the best college for them,” said Karen Fong Donoghue, founder & president of The Rugger’s Edge. "While I am on maternity leave, I am leaving the Rugger's Edge guidance and curriculum in the capable hands of [College Rugby Advisor] Kitt Wagner Ruiz, who has over 10 years of experience working with high school students as both a high school teacher and as a rugby coach. Her rugby accolades are also second to none, having represented the USA at two recent World Cups, and I am confident she will be able to educate the players and the parents who attend the special parent seminar planned for them on July 1st."
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside so many wonderful coaches at the US Development Camp, helping young ruggers prepare for the next step in their lives,” affirmed Wagner Ruiz, a 7-year veteran of the US women’s national team. "Rugger’s Edge will be there every step of the way to assist these campers in finding the best fit college for them, both on and off the pitch.”
As during last year’s camp, The Rugger’s Edge will once again provide academic presentations aimed at preparing student-athletes for the collegiate experience, with topics including "Beginning the Colleage Search: How to Find the Best College Match" and "How to Write A Winning College Essay". A new addition to the 2015 camp will be an “Inside College Testing” seminar on June 29th, providing campers with current strategies and tips for campers to jump-start their preparation for standardized testing this fall. The session will be hosted by master tutor Sean Quinn of ArborBridge, the preferred test company of The Rugger's Edge, alongside Kitt Wagner Ruiz.
"As much as possible, we want all campers to be able to leave camp with not only the athletic tools to develop into fine collegiate players, but also understand the critical steps they need to take in their overall academic planning to set them up for success with all of their college applications,” remarked Fong Donoghue.
US Collegiate Development hosts the 2015 Boys Showcase Camp June 28-July 1 at Dartmouth College. Top-up skill clinics will be available before and after the Showcase Camp.
